Accelerate Growth: Moving Beyond Techniques into Transformation
According to Dr. Ronald Heifetz, a leader in adaptive leadership theory, those seeking real change must learn to distinguish between technical and adaptive challenges. This difference matters—a lot—especially if you're trying to accelerate meaningful growth in your life or leadership.
Technical vs. Adaptive Challenges
Here’s a practical example:
Let’s say someone wants to speak up more confidently at work. A typical response might be to grab a book, listen to a podcast, or talk to a mentor—all valuable resources. These efforts fall under technical solutions: they offer new information, strategies, or techniques. And while those are useful, they don’t always address the real issue.
Heifetz would argue that the deeper challenge might be adaptive. Maybe the person’s silence isn’t due to lack of skill but stems from limiting assumptions—like the belief that their voice doesn’t matter, or fear of being wrong. Adaptive challenges like these can’t be solved with techniques alone. They require transformation at the mindset level.
True Growth Requires a Mindset Shift
If you want to be different, not just act different, you’ll need more than information. You need insight. You need to reflect on how you’ve been thinking, not just what you’ve been doing.
That’s where the Accelerate Growth Journal comes in. It’s not just another tool for productivity—it’s a coaching process that helps you surface adaptive challenges and take meaningful steps forward. It guides you to question assumptions, clarify values, and reshape beliefs. And that’s where transformation begins.
“To grow adaptively means you are acquiring a new mindset, not just new skills.”
The journal doesn’t just help you do better—it helps you think differently, so your new behaviors flow from your evolving mindset. It’s about discovering a new way forward, not recycling old strategies.
Embrace the Coaching Process
Approach the process with curiosity. Be intrigued. Get excited about the opportunity to grow in ways that are deeply personal and meaningful to you. This isn’t about fixing what’s broken—it’s about uncovering new possibilities and stepping into your potential.
As you engage, you’ll notice that your internal wins—insights, mindset shifts, clarified values—begin shaping your external actions. Your potential becomes your new practices.
Growth Opportunity: Where Do You Want to Grow?
Think about an area of your life where you want to grow—something you’d love to be more consistent in. Maybe you’ve already made progress in this area, but you haven’t been able to sustain it. That’s where the Accelerate Growth process shines.
Take a look at this metaphorical “Wheel of Life.” It represents the different, significant areas that make up your life. From that wheel, choose just one area to prioritize for now. Ask yourself:
- What would I be excited to accomplish?
- How important is this goal to me?
- What would it mean to achieve this?
Let that sense of possibility fuel your motivation to experiment, stretch, and grow.
Choose a Focus Area:
Here are a few examples to consider:
- Business Relationships: “I want to be more decisive in my work.”
- Personal Growth: “I want to turn mistakes into learning opportunities and model vulnerability.”
- Health & Fitness: “I want to get physically fit.” or “I want to eat a healthy diet.”
- Family & Relationships: “I want to be more present with the people I love.”
Keep It Doable and Positive
Your growth opportunity should be:
- Dependent on your participation
- Realistic and achievable
- Stated in a positive way
For example, don’t say “I don’t want to gain weight” or “I don’t want to make mistakes.” Instead, say “I want to move daily” or “I want to learn from every experience.”
If you’re unsure what to focus on, ask someone close to you:
Q: What do you think would be an important growth area for me right now?
You might be surprised by the clarity you gain through conversation.
Once you’ve identified your growth opportunity, write it down. You may keep the same one for several days or even weeks. This becomes your macro goal while you take micro steps daily to move closer to it.
